The history of psychedelics is as old as human civilization itself, with representations of hallucinogenic substances and experiences found in archaeological finds more than 10,000 years old. It seems likely that their use extends deep into humanity’s prehistory, and over millions of years of evolution, influenced the development of the human brain by modulating neurotransmitter systems including serotonin and dopamine. Incorporated into shamanic rituals, psychedelic substances were used to gain insights into the mysteries of life and death, and to bring about a deep, transcendent awareness of our healing potential.
I have been using psychedelics in my practice for more than two decades. For many years I was definitely tight-lipped about my use, given the legal risks, but in 2015 finally opened up and shared my experience using psychedelics including MDMA (better thought of as an entactogen) and magic mushrooms with my mother as she was dying of cancer. Others have also written about experiences I have facilitated, including Dr Russell Kennedy, who was finally able to overcome his anxiety with my assistance (and wrote a useful book about what he learned). While these experiences are often very useful, they are best used as part of a holistic approach, as an opportunity to view one’s situation from an entirely new perspective – but are not a substitute for putting into practice the insights one has experienced.
If you are similarly interested in a guided psychedelic experience, please book a consult (below) to get the process started. There is a $60 CAN fee to determine your eligibility, and following this, I will arrange a time and day for you to join me here on my little farm in Powell River BC. While the exact cost can vary depending on the situation and requirements, I typically charge about $1000 CAN for such an experience, which includes two nights accommodation and food, a detailed initial clinical assessment, a follow-up appointment about 2-3 weeks later (via Zoom), and the experience itself. A retreat for couples and/or small groups can also be arranged. For local people when accommodation and food isn’t necessary, I will typically charge an hourly rate.
Given the recent popularity of psychedelic retreats, I feel that it is important to mention that I follow a strict code of ethical conduct when interacting with all my patients, to optimize the best experience possible on this journey of self-exploration. Your emotional, mental, and physical safety is of the upmost importance to me.
